Nations League League A: What Matchday 1 Told Us About the Quarter-Final Race

The Nations League has a habit of ruining pre-tournament certainty inside ninety minutes, and Matchday 1 of the 2026/27 edition kept the tradition alive. The headline fixture ended level, the group most people had already awarded to a favourite now has a different leader, and three of the four League A groups are effectively wide open.

Here is the round as it actually happened, group by group, and what it does to the quarter-final market.

Netherlands 1-1 Germany in Amsterdam was the match of the round and the least decisive result of the round. Two sides who expected to separate themselves from the pack shared the points, and both now travel with a margin of error they had not planned for.

Serbia 1-2 Greece did the rest. Greece's stoppage-time winner means they lead the group after one match, the only side in A2 with three points, and Serbia are already playing catch-up.

Standings after Matchday 1: Greece 3, Germany 1, Netherlands 1, Serbia 0. In a six-game group a two-point head start over both favourites is not decisive — but it changes who has to chase.

Portugal 1-0 Wales was the most Portugal result imaginable: control the ball, control the tempo, win by the only goal and never look especially troubled. Efficient, unspectacular, three points.

Norway 3-2 Denmark was the opposite — a Scandinavian shootout that confirmed what the underlying numbers have said about Norway for two years. They score against anybody, and they concede against anybody. For bettors, that is a goals market, not a result market.

Austria 3-1 Israel and Kosovo 1-0 Republic of Ireland filled out an opening round in which home advantage held almost everywhere except Belgrade.

Only the group winners reach the quarter-finals, which makes the Nations League outright market unusually sensitive to a single dropped point. Germany and the Netherlands both dropped one on day one, and both remain the two best squads in A2 — but they now need results against each other rather than merely against the field.

Spain, France and England open their groups as the clear favourites and did nothing in this window to change that assessment. If you are building an accumulator on group winners, those are the three anchors.

The value, as ever, is in the group where the favourites have already stumbled. Greece at a double-digit price to win Group A2 before a ball was kicked is now a live runner at a materially shorter number, and the market has not fully repriced the knock-on effect on the Netherlands and Germany.
