When a Big Club Wobbles: Betting Against the Badge

Every season, one enormous club goes through a run where nothing works. Chances go begging, the goalkeeper has a month he would like to forget, and the manager's press conferences get shorter. And every season, the betting market keeps pricing that club as if the badge alone is worth half a goal.

The question is always the same: are they creating chances and failing to score, or are they not creating chances at all? A side generating plenty of quality opportunities and losing anyway is unlucky, and backing against them is a good way to lose money slowly.

A side whose chance creation has collapsed is genuinely broken, and the market usually takes four or five matches to accept it. That gap is the whole opportunity.

Away trips to well-organised mid-table sides are the cleanest spot. The struggling giant is still favourite, the home side is priced generously, and the double chance on the home team is often close to even money for a genuinely likely outcome.

The alternative is the Asian handicap: taking the underdog with a half-goal start removes the sting of the late equaliser that big clubs specialise in.
