Europa League 2026/27 Predictions: Who Actually Wins It?

There is a reason the Europa League is the lads' favourite outright market of the season: the field is genuinely open. Where the Champions League has seven credible winners, the Europa League has fifteen — and the difference between the second favourite and the tenth favourite is often smaller than the bookmakers' prices imply.

The competition also rewards a specific kind of club: a big domestic name having a mediocre league season, a squad deep enough for Thursday-Sunday football, and a manager who takes the competition seriously. Get those three right and you have your shortlist.

The single biggest factor in this competition arrives in January, when the clubs finishing third in their Champions League league-phase groups drop into the Europa League knockout play-offs. Those sides regularly walk straight through the draw, and they are usually available at a decent price in August because nobody knows who they will be yet.

That means an early outright bet on a Europa League regular is competing against unknown, better opponents in the spring. Our approach: bet small in August, and keep a chunk of your stake for the January market once the drop-downs are confirmed.

Roma have made the latter stages of European competition a habit and have the squad profile that suits it — physical, cynical, dangerous on the counter. In a competition decided by two-legged ties, that matters more than pretty football.

Aston Villa and Newcastle-type Premier League sides are always shortened aggressively by the market because of the money and squad depth involved, and English clubs have a strong recent record here. The catch is fixture congestion: a Premier League club chasing a top-five place will rotate heavily in the league phase.

Real Betis and Villarreal are the classic Spanish Europa League profile: technically excellent, comfortable in tight home legs, and utterly used to this competition. Neither will be short in the market, and both have realistic routes to a semi-final.

Look for clubs who have just sold a star player and reinvested in depth rather than a marquee name. Depth wins Thursday-night competitions. Look also for clubs whose domestic league is already decided — a side sitting comfortably in fourth by February will field a full-strength XI in Europe while their opponents rotate.

Our other rule of thumb: fade the club whose fans are loudest about 'wanting the trophy' and back the one whose manager has quietly named a first-choice XI for every European tie since September. Team selection tells you far more than press conferences.

Outright winner is fun but low-percentage. The markets we prefer: to reach the final (much better value on second-tier favourites), over/under goals in the league phase (mismatches are common and the totals are often set low), and home wins in the first knockout leg where the market overrates the away side's name.

In-play betting is also unusually profitable here because squad rotation creates chaotic first halves. If a favourite names six changes and goes a goal down, the live price on them to draw is frequently better than it should be.

Roma and a Premier League entrant head our shortlist, with a Spanish side as the each-way angle. But the honest answer to 'who wins the Europa League' in August is: probably a club that isn't in it yet. Keep stake back for January.
